Frequently Asked Questions
Information on the structure, content, and preparation for the CCSE test.
What does the CCSE test consist of?
The test of constitutional and sociocultural knowledge of Spain (CCSE) was developed by the Cervantes Institute in 2015.
It is made up of five tasks containing a total of 25 closed-answer questions: there are questions with three answer options of which only one is true, and others with a single answer option of true or false).
The content is divided into two groups: Government, law and citizen participation in Spain (60 % of the items) and Spanish culture, history and society (40 % of the items).
The test lasts a maximum of 45 minutes and is written in the contemporary peninsular variety of Spanish.
How is the CCSE test marked?
The CCSE test contains 25 questions with only one correct answer and is therefore automatically marked. Correct answers receive 1 point; incorrect answers receive 0 points and are not penalised. The maximum score that can be obtained in the CCSE test is equal to the number of questions it contains (i.e. 25 points). In order to pass the test (and obtain a pass mark) it is necessary to answer 15 of the 25 questions correctly, which is 60% of the total number of questions, the same criterion used in the evaluation and certification system for the DELE Spanish diplomas.
What is the content level of the CCSE test?
The level of the contents is that which appears in the ‘Approach phase’ of ‘Cultural references’ and ‘Socio-cultural knowledge and behaviour’: two inventories of knowledge of the Instituto Cervantes curriculum plan. Reference levels:
- «Referentes culturales», from which the aspects of greater universality and greater accessibility have been selected.
- «Saberes y comportamientos socioculturales», these contents have been selected from those topics which are closest to the candidates’ everyday experiences.
How can I prepare for the CCSE exam?
Candidates can access various support materials (CCSE test guide, sample CCSE exam, preparation manual, multilingual glossary…) on the website of the Instituto Cervantes.
Moreover, CastiLa Granada, in addition to its Culture and Society course, also offers specific CCSE preparation courses of 2, 4 or 8 hours prior to each exam.
Is it compulsory to take a course?
No, you do not need to take any specific course or use any specific teaching material to take the CCSE test.
